TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -Yankees designated hitter-left fielder Hideki Matsui hit a solo homer in his first minor league rehab game with Class-A Tampa on Friday.
Matsui, on the 15-day disabled list since June 27 with an injured left knee, went 1-for-3 as the DH. His sixth-inning homer provided the winning margin in Tampa’s 1-0 victory over Clearwater.
Matsui was also in the lineup for the second game of a doubleheader Friday night. He batted .323 with seven homers and 34 RBIs in 69 games with the Yankees this season.
Also, former major league pitcher Ramiro Mendoza is throwing off a mound and hopes to pitch in a winter league this year. He visited with former Yankees’ teammate and current Tampa manager Luis Sojo before the game.
Andrew Brackman, the Yankees’ first round pick in the 2007 amateur draft, is ready to start throwing batting practice. The right-hander, coming back from elbow ligament surgery last year, had an appendectomy on June 10.
