CINCINNATI (AP) -Right-hander Chris Carpenter was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday by the St. Louis Cardinals because of a strained pitching shoulder, joining right-hander Adam Wainwright and left-hander Mark Mulder on the sideline.
Carpenter had reconstructive elbow surgery in July 2007 and made three big league starts before the latest problem developed. Carpenter felt pain in the shoulder while throwing a fastball last Sunday during his start against the Chicago Cubs. An MRI on Tuesday detected a strain.
St. Louis already had planned to have right-hander Brad Thompson take Carpenter’s spot in the rotation Friday night against the Cincinnati Reds.
Outfielder Brian Barton, out since July 6 with a hand injury, was activated. He hit .246 in 63 games this season with two homers and 11 RBIs.
