CLEVELAND (AP) -The Los Angeles Angels placed shortstop Maicer Izturis on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a sprained left thumb and recalled first baseman Kendry Morales from Triple-A Salt Lake.
Izturis aggravated the thumb diving for a ground ball in the ninth inning of Wednesday night’s loss to Seattle. He originally sprained the thumb Aug. 1 and missed eight of the next nine games, but didn’t go on the DL.
Izturis, a switch-hitter, is batting .269 with three homers, 27 RBIs and 11 stolen bases in 79 games.
Erick Aybar figures to get the bulk of the playing time at shortstop and will be backed up by Sean Rodriguez.
Morales, also a switch-hitter, was batting .338 with 14 homers and 58 RBIs in 70 games at Salt Lake. He is hitless in one at-bat with the Angels this season.
