NEW YORK (AP) -At least five of the top 11 picks in baseball’s amateur draft agreed to contracts in the hours before Friday’s midnight deadline, including No. 2 selection Pedro Alvarez, who received a $6 million deal from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Baltimore and University of San Diego left-hander Brian Matusz, the No. 4 pick, agreed to a four-year contract that guarantees him $3,472,500. San Francisco agreed with Florida State catcher Buster Posey, the No. 5 selection.
Miami first baseman Yonder Alonso, the seventh pick, agreed to a $4.55 million, five-year contract with Cincinnati. South Carolina first baseman Justin Smoak, the No. 11 pick, agreed with Texas for a $3.5 million signing bonus.
San Diego agreed to a $1.15 million signing bonus with Wake Forest first baseman Allan Dykstra, the 23rd pick.
