ATLANTA (AP) -The San Francisco Giants placed right-handed reliever Randy Messenger on the 15-day disabled list after a batting-practice mishap left him with a broken left hand.
Messenger was struck by a line drive before the Giants’ 6-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves. His injury was initially described as a bruise, but X-rays revealed a fracture of the fifth metacarpal bone.
Messenger is 1-4 with a 2.62 ERA and one save this season. He was acquired from Florida on May 31 for struggling Giants closer Armando Benitez.
San Francisco will likely call up left-hander Pat Misch from its Triple-A team in Fresno before Thursday night’s series finale in Atlanta.
