BALTIMORE (AP) - A person familiar with the balloting tells The Associated Press that Rob Manfred fell one vote short of the required three-quarters majority on the first ballot to become the new baseball commissioner.
Manfred, baseball's chief operating officer, received 22 votes and Boston Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner got eight, the person said Thursday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.
Team officials met in small groups after the first vote before the full meeting was to resume.
Results of the first ballot were first reported by CBS.
The third candidate, MLB Executive Vice President of Business Tim Brosnan, dropped out just before the start of voting.
