ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -Texas Rangers closer C.J. Wilson has decided to have surgery on his left elbow and will miss the rest of the season.
Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Wilson opted for surgery after meeting Monday in California with Dr. Lewis Yocum. The operation to clean up bone spurs and bone chips will be done later this week.
Wilson was 2-2 with 24 saves in 28 chances with a 6.04 ERA. He allowed 11 earned runs in six innings his last eight appearances.
The decision for surgery was first reported on the team’s MLB.com site. Yocum performed Wilson’s elbow ligament replacement surgery in 2004.
Wilson was put on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, a day after he gave up a grand slam while pitching in a non-save situation against the New York Yankees to work out some mechanical problems with his delivery. The lefty said after the game that his elbow was bothering him.
Texas was off Monday before opening a three-game series Tuesday night at Boston.
“We’d like to have C.J. help us down the stretch, but he knows his elbow better than anyone else, and he didn’t feel he could help the club,” Daniels wrote in an e-mail response.
Daniels said doctors feel that Wilson should be fully recovered “well in advance of spring training.”
