NEW YORK (AP) -Carlos Beltran was held out of the starting lineup for the New York Mets’ game against the Florida Marlins on Saturday night.
The switch-hitting center fielder came off the disabled list Friday after sitting out with a strained muscle on his left side. Mets manager Willie Randolph said Beltran isn’t where he wants to be when he bats right-handed so he decided to rest him against Marlins left-hander Scott Olsen.
“I’m not going to push him,” Randolph said. “(We’ll) try to ease into this as much as we can.”
Randolph said he plans to play Beltran in the finale of the weekend series against Florida on Sunday.
Beltran hit a three-run homer in New York’s 4-3 loss to Florida on Friday and is batting .263 with 20 homers and 65 RBIs this season. He had a .429 average with two homers in 14 career at-bats against Olsen.
