PHOENIX (AP) -Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Orlando Hudson underwent surgery late Saturday night to repair a dislocated bone in his left wrist and will miss the remainder of the season.
Hudson was placed on the 15-day disabled list before the game and right-handed pitcher Edgar Gonzalez was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Arizona selected outfielder Jeff Salazar from Triple-A Tucson, where he hit .364 in 24 games with four homers and 18 RBIs. Salazar hit .248 in 58 games with the Diamondbacks before he was designated for assignment on July 4.
Hudson injured his wrist on a wild play during the sixth inning of the Atlanta Braves’ 11-4 win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday night. Hudson lunged to his left to try and field an errant throw from pitcher Juan Cruz when Braves catcher Brian McCann slid into Hudson, bending his left wrist backward and stripping the glove from his hand.
Hudson’s surgery Saturday night was the first of two procedures that will be performed. He will have surgery within the next couple of days to repair ligament damage suffered on the play.
Arizona manager Bob Melvin said they could have done everything at once but Dr. Don Sheridan, a hand specialist, wasn’t around.
“They wanted to make sure they got in and got the bone in place last night, which is the easier part of the procedure,” Melvin said.
Hudson, who hit .305 average in 107 games, also missed the final 21 regular-season games and the postseason in 2007 after tearing ligaments in the same wrist. Sheridan also performed that procedure.
