CINCINNATI (AP) -The San Diego Padres placed righty reliever Doug Brocail on the bereavement list and put outfielder Scott Hairston on the 15-day disabled list Friday.
To fill the spots, San Diego recalled left-hander Joe Thatcher and purchased the contract of righty Jack Cassel from Triple-A Portland.
Brocail is expected to rejoin the team Tuesday in San Diego after attending the funeral of his grandfather in Colorado. He is 4-1 with a 3.96 ERA.
Hairston strained a muscle in his left side while trying to stretch a single into a double during Thursday night’s 5-0 loss at St. Louis. He has hit .400 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 11 games since being acquired from Arizona on July 27 for pitcher Leo Rosales.
Thatcher will be making his second appearance with the Padres after being acquired from Milwaukee on July 25. He pitched two scoreless innings over three games before being optioned on Aug. 1 to Portland, where he worked 4 1-3 scoreless innings.
Cassel is 7-11 with a 3.54 ERA in 24 appearances, including 21 starts, with Portland.
