ST. LOUIS (AP) -D.J. Houlton was optioned by the Los Angeles Dodgers to Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday to make room for newly acquired Mark Sweeney.
The seldom-used right-handed reliever is 0-2 with a 5.17 ERA in 10 games covering two stints with the Dodgers. He has been used only once since July 25 and is scheduled to get more work in the minors before a probable return on Sept. 1 when rosters are expanded.
Sweeney was second on the career pinch hits list with 155 and first in the majors with 16 this year. He gives the Dodgers a late-inning bat from both sides of the plate along with Olmedo Saenz.
