DENVER (AP) -The San Diego Padres placed catcher Josh Bard on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow on Saturday and recalled Luke Carlin from Triple-A Portland.
The move is retroactive to Thursday.
Bard injured his elbow during early batting practice Friday before the Padres opened a weekend series against Colorado. He was scratched from the lineup and examined by Rockies medical director Dr. Thomas Noonan on Friday.
“He had a similar incident earlier in his career and it took seven to 10 days,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “Just the way Josh feels it doesn’t look like he’ll be back in three or four days.”
Bard is going on the DL for the second time this season. He missed two months after spraining his left ankle on May 21. He was activated July 24 and was 5-for-18 with a home run and five RBIs before getting hurt again. He is hitting .209 in 148 at-bats this season.
This is Carlin’s second call-up this year. He was recalled May 9 and was on the roster until July 24. He played in 30 games in that span, hitting .138.
