CLEVELAND (AP) -The Cleveland Indians made a series of roster moves Tuesday, calling up infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and signing infielder Russell Branyan to a minor league contract.
Utility infielder Mike Rouse was designated for assignment to make room for Cabrera. Rouse hit .119 in 41 games.
Cabrera started the season at Double-A Akron, where he hit .310 with eight home runs and 54 RBIs in 96 games and also stole 23 bases. He was promoted July 30 to Triple-A Buffalo and hit .316 with three RBIs in nine games.
The 21-year-old Cabrera will make his major league debut wearing No. 13, the same number worn by former Indians shortstop and fellow Venezuelan native Omar Vizquel.
Branyan was drafted by the Indians in 1994 and played for Cleveland from 1998-2002. He hit .197 with seven home runs and 19 RBIs in 61 games with San Diego before being released July 28.
The Indians assigned him to Buffalo.
