CINCINNATI (AP) -The Cincinnati Reds shuffled their league-worst bullpen again Tuesday, activating Eddie Guardado and recalling Gary Majewski.
The Reds optioned rookie left-hander Jon Coutlangus (4-1, 3.93 ERA) to Triple-A Louisville and placed utilityman Ryan Freel on the 15-day disabled list because torn cartilage in his right knee.
Infielder Juan Castro had season-ending surgery on his right elbow Tuesday, the Reds said.
Guardado, obtained in a midseason trade with Seattle last year, took over the closer job before elbow problems forced season-ending surgery. Also bothered by back troubles, the 36-year-old left-hander hadn’t pitched yet this season for the Reds.
Majewski, a right-hander obtained at midseason from Washington last year, was plagued by shoulder problems. He began this season at Louisville, and was 0-1 with a 15.88 ERA for the Reds this season before being sent back to Louisville in June.
With an ERA of 5.00, the Reds’ relievers rank last in the National League.
