TORONTO (AP) -Texas Rangers right-hander Kameron Loe is to go on the 5-day disabled list Saturday, a move retroactive to July 30.
Right-hander Mike Wood will be recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma to start in Loe’s place Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Loe is 5-9 with a 5.80 ERA in 24 games this season, including 19 starts. He said the left side of his lower back became stiff while he was throwing a bullpen session between starts earlier this week.
“Towards the end of my bullpen, I felt my back getting a little tight,” Loe said Friday. “I threw one more pitch, and it just locked up on me.
Loe said he still felt “a little uncomfortable” Friday, but hoped to throw from flat ground Saturday. He is expected to miss two starts.
“I’ve battled this kind of stuff before,” Loe said. “It usually clears up in two to three days. This one is going to take a little longer. Being a tall guy, I have lower-back issues every once in a while. I’ve never had to miss a start before because of it. This one really got me so they’re going to put me on the DL.”
Wood was 9-3 with a 3.23 ERA at Triple-A. He has pitched in five games for Texas this season, going 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA.
Wood isn’t likely to pitch deep into the game Saturday after throwing 81 pitches over eight innings in a victory over Fresno on Wednesday. He gave up three runs and five hits.
