SEATTLE (AP) -The Seattle Mariners purchased the contract of left-hander Jake Woods from Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, filling a void in their bullpen created when the team traded Arthur Rhodes on Thursday.
A spot on Seattle’s 25-man roster was made available when Rhodes was traded to the Florida Marlins in exchange for minor league pitcher Gaby Hernandez. Rhodes was one of two left-handers in Seattle’s bullpen. Woods was available for Saturday’s game against Baltimore.
He appeared in 32 games at Tacoma this season, going 6-1 with a 4.08 ERA. He allowed only six earned runs in his last 22 1-3 innings at Tacoma.
This will be Woods’ third straight season making an appearance with the Mariners. In 2006, Woods spent the entire season with Seattle, going 7-4 with a 4.20 ERA in 37 appearances. He started eight games that season as well. Last year, Woods appeared in four games with Seattle.
