ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -The Texas Rangers placed rookie right-hander Eric Hurley on the 15-day disabled list prior to Friday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The move opened a spot for right-hander Tommy Hunter, who was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma to make his first major league start against Toronto a few hours later.
The Rangers also recalled infielder Travis Metcalf from Oklahoma, optioned infielder Ryan Roberts to the same club, and transferred left-hander Kason Gabbard from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list.
Hurley was scheduled to start Friday night, but was scratched earlier this week due to right shoulder inflammation. He tried to play catch on Friday but said his arm “felt a little uncomfortable” and shut down the session.
Hurley, 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA in five starts for the Rangers this season, was also on the disabled list from July 8-26 with a strained left hamstring.
Hunter is a combined 11-8 with a 3.56 ERA in 22 starts for three minor league teams in the Rangers organization. He’s the 16th rookie to play for the Rangers this season, tying a club record.
Metcalf is in his third stint with the Rangers this season. He opened the season on the 15-day disabled list with a torn left hamstring sustained during a spring training game. Metcalf is batting .247 with three homers and 29 RBIs in 62 games for Oklahoma.
Roberts was called up from Oklahoma on Tuesday and appeared in only one game, striking out as a pinch hitter.
Gabbard was placed on the disabled list on June 28 with left elbow inflammation and had season-ending surgery to remove bone spurs from the elbow in mid-July.
