SAN DIEGO (AP) -San Diego Padres shortstop Khalil Greene has a broken left hand and could miss the rest of the season, manager Bud Black said Thursday.
After fouling a ball off his shin and then striking out in a loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night, Greene hit something in the tunnel between the dugout and clubhouse with his left hand, Black said.
“He was in a lot of pain down in the tunnel,” Black said. “I think it was frustration with getting hit and frustration just in general with his last few at-bats.”
Greene is expected to be out six to eight weeks, which could mean his season is over.
“It’s getting right there to the wire,” Black said.
Greene has struggled this year, hitting .213 with 10 homers and 35 RBIs. He was named the team’s MVP in 2007 after hitting .254 and setting career highs with 27 homers, 44 doubles and 97 RBIs. He played in a career-best 153 games that year after missing time in previous seasons due to injuries.
Luis Rodriguez replaced Greene on Wednesday night and is expected to start at shortstop on Friday night against the San Francisco Giants. The Padres were off Thursday.
To take Greene’s roster spot, the Padres are expected to activate second baseman Tadahito Iguchi, who’s been on the disabled list with a separated right shoulder.
