PITTSBURGH (AP) -The Pittsburgh Pirates called up right-handed starter Jason Davis from Triple-A Indianapolis and sent former first-round draft pick John Van Benschoten back to the minor leagues before Sunday’s game against the San Diego Padres.
Davis was 6-9 with a 4.41 ERA in 21 appearances for Indianapolis. The 28-year-old had been the team’s best starter of late, with a 2-0 record and a 1.95 ERA in his past four outings.
Davis signed as a free agent with the Pirates on March 29 after being released by the Texas Rangers. He pitched in the major leagues for the Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners from 2002-07, compiling a 20-22 record with a 4.78 ERA in 130 games.
Van Benschoten, who has been called up three times this season, was returned to Indianapolis following another poor start Saturday in a 9-6 loss to the Padres. He allowed seven runs and six hits in 1 2-3 innings to raise his ERA to 10.48 in nine games this season.
The 28-year-old, who was the No. 8 overall selection in 2001 draft, is 2-13 with a 9.20 ERA in 26 games in the major leagues.
To make room for Davis on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated starter Luis Munoz for assignment. Munoz, a 26-year-old right-hander, has pitched for Indianapolis and Double-A Altoona this season.
Pittsburgh, which traded outfielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte to the New York Yankees on Saturday, still has a spot to fill on its major league roster. The team called up outfielder Steve Pearce from Indianapolis, but has yet to fill the vacancy left by Marte.
