OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -Infielder Eric Patterson was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday immediately inserted into the Oakland Athletics’ lineup against the Texas Rangers.
Patterson, obtained as part of the Rich Harden trade with Chicago on July 8, batted leadoff in his Oakland debut. The 25-year-old, who hit .237 with one home run and seven RBIs in 13 games with the Cubs, had a .349 average with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 14 games for Sacramento.
Oakland manager Bob Geren was unsure whether Patterson would arrive in Oakland in time to play against the Rangers, so he filled out two lineup cards: one with Patterson’s name and one without.
To make room for Patterson, the A’s optioned outfielder Matt Murton to Sacramento. Murton was also obtained in the trade with Chicago but was hitting only .100 with two RBIs in 30 at-bats for Oakland.
“For me it’s a matter of going down there and taking my at-bats … and doing the things that have made me successful,” Murton said.
