SAN DIEGO (AP) -The Padres signed two-time All-Star Shea Hillenbrand to a minor league contract on Friday, and he will report to Triple-A Portland.
The right-handed hitting Hillenbrand, who turned 32 on Friday, played in 53 games this season with the Los Angeles Angels before being designated for assignment on June 29. He cleared waivers and became a free agent on July 11.
He batted .254 with five doubles, three home runs and 22 RBIs.
Hillenbrand split last season between Toronto and San Francisco, where he was an everyday player. He also was a regular during prior stints in Arizona and Boston.

He played in parts of seven seasons with the Boston Red Sox (2001-2003), Arizona Diamondbacks (2003-2004), Blue Jays (2005-2006), Giants (2006) and Angels (2007).
In 923 Major League games, he has a career average of .285 with 202 doubles, 13 triples, 107 homers and 481 RBIs. He was originally selected by the Red Sox in the 10th round of the 1996 draft.
