ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -The Tampa Bay Devil Rays obtained Grant Balfour from the Milwaukee Brewers for minor leaguer Seth McClung in a trade of relief pitchers Friday night.
Balfour had been designated for assignment earlier in the day after going 0-2 with a 20.25 ERA in three appearances. He was with the Minnesota Twins for parts of three seasons from 2001-04.
“For some time he has had some injury problems, but we feel he’s healthy and is capable of helping us out at the major league level,” Tampa Bay executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. “He competes extremely well, so we’re excited to have him in the mix in the bullpen.”
The Devil Rays bullpen has struggled all season. Over its last 26 1-3 innings, the bullpen has given up 39 runs.
Balfour could join the Devil Rays on Saturday.
McClung was 1-5 with five saves at Triple-A Durham this year. He was 17-24 with six saves and a 6.27 ERA in 85 games over parts of three seasons with the Devil Rays.
