CHICAGO (AP) -Home plate umpire Gerry Davis left Saturday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins after being hit with a pitch.
Davis was struck near the throat by a high fastball from Florida right-hander Chris Volstad in the bottom of the second inning. Chicago pitcher Rich Harden pulled back his bunt attempt and the ball nipped catcher John Baker’s mitt, bouncing into Davis.
Davis walked off the field with Cubs trainers, then was replaced by second base umpire Bruce Dreckman after a short delay.
