LOS ANGELES (AP) -The Los Angeles Dodgers activated outfielder Juan Pierre from the 15-day disabled list Friday.
They made room on the 25-man roster by placing outfielder Delwyn Young on the DL retroactive to Thursday with a strained right oblique.
Pierre, who missed 20 games because of a sprained left knee while on the disabled list for the first time in his career, was in the lineup batting leadoff against the Washington Nationals on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series.
Pierre was injured June 29 when he slid into second during a stolen base attempt in the sixth inning of the Dodgers’ 1-0 home loss to the Los Angeles Angels. He played left field the last two days with Triple-A Las Vegas while on a rehab assignment, going 3-for-6 with a double and two walks against Omaha.
The 30-year-old Pierre was hitting .277 with 35 stolen bases in 73 games when he was injured. He is baseball’s active stolen base leader with 424.
Matt Kemp was the Dodgers’ leadoff hitter in 18 of the 20 games Pierre missed, hitting .316 with six doubles, three homers, 11 RBIs, 10 walks and a .393 on-base percentage.
Young injured his oblique during a pinch-hitting appearance in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s 5-3 loss at Colorado. He ranks third in the majors with 12 pinch-hits, and is batting .248 with one homer and six RBI in 69 games.
