CLEVELAND (AP) -Reliever Joel Pineiro, designated for assignment earlier this week by the Boston Red Sox, accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket and was expected to pitch three innings Wednesday night.
Pineiro, signed as a free agent in January after six seasons in Seattle, was 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA in 31 relief appearances for the Red Sox. The 28-year-old was on the disabled list from June 28 until July 13 with a sprained right ankle.
Pineiro is 59-56 with a 4.50 ERA in his career over 216 games, including 159 starts.
The Red Sox designated the right-hander for assignment on Monday when they recalled Jon Lester, who won his first major league start after being diagnosed with cancer.
