BALTIMORE (AP) Baltimore’s rookie pitcher Dylan Bundy notched his first major league victory as a starter as he steered the Orioles to a 5-1 victory over Cleveland on Friday that moved them back to the top of the American League East standings.
The Orioles moved back above Boston, whose powerful bats were kept in check in a home defeat by Minnesota.
Baltimore’s division rival, the New York Yankees won an interleague clash with a suddenly sliding San Francisco, while the key National League games saw St. Louis beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 16-inning marathon and the New York Mets win at Miami in the opener of an important series.
Baltimore’s Bundy allowed only one unearned run in five innings and Odrisamer Despaigne followed Bundy with 3 2/3 scoreless innings, which included a scary moment when he hit Juan Uribe on the helmet above the left ear, causing a contusion.
Mark Trumbo hit a three-run homer and Manny Machado added a solo shot for the Orioles.
The New York Yankees won 3-2 to send San Francisco to a sixth straight loss, with Gold Glove shortstop Brandon Crawford contributing to the defeat with a career-worst three errors.
Chase Headley opened the eighth with a swinging bunt for a single and Mark Teixeira walked. Austin Romine followed with a grounder to Crawford, who tagged second, spun around and made a hard, high throw that glanced off the first baseman’s glove. Headley kept running and beat the throw to home plate for what stood as the winning run.
St. Louis’ Matt Adams homered in the 16th to lead St. Louis to a 4-3 win against the Dodgers and a season-best fifth straight victory.
Adams’ homer came with one out off Bud Norris and gave the Cardinals their second straight win on their final at-bat.
New York’s Jose Reyes had his first three-hit game since rejoining the Mets early this month and scored twice to help deliver a 5-3 win at Miami, closing the gap between the NL East rivals to half a game.
Reyes drove in a run, stole a base and scored on two sacrifice flies. The game was Reyes’ first at Marlins Park since he played for Miami in 2012.
Miami’s Ichiro Suzuki struck out on three pitches in the eighth inning as a pinch-hitter and remained four hits shy of 3,000.
Seattle’s James Paxton pitched seven strong innings to steer the Mariners to a 2-1 win at Toronto.
Seth Smith doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and handed the Blue Jays a loss that left them two games off the pace in the AL East.
Kansas City’s Danny Duffy kept Texas’ big bats under control and led the Royals to a 3-1 victory.
The only run Duffy (6-1) allowed came on a solo homer in the fourth inning as he stayed in command despite searing temperatures.
Houston’s Lance McCullers struck out 10 in eight-plus solid innings that led the Astros to a 2-1 win against the Los Angeles Angels.
McCullers’ 10 strikeouts tied a season-high and he fanned star Angels slugger Mike Trout three times. He was lifted after giving up two walks to start the ninth.
Los Angeles had won a season-high six straight.
San Diego ended a four-game skid by winning 5-3 at Washington, with Matt Kemp homering twice and driving in four runs.
Kemp hit a solo shot in the first inning and gave San Diego the lead for good with a three-run homer in the fifth. He has six homers in his last six games and the Padres have homered in 20 straight, the longest streak in the National League this season.
San Diego rookie Luis Perdomo gave up two runs in the first inning but limited Washington to just two hits over the next six innings in his longest outing of the season.
Chicago’s Dexter Fowler led off the first with a homer and drove in three runs in his first game back from a long-term hamstring injury, powering the Cubs to a 5-2 win against Milwaukee.
Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera tied a season high with four hits, including a go-ahead two-run single in the seventh that lifted the Tigers to a 7-5 win against the Chicago White Sox.
Philadelphia’s Zach Eflin pitched his first major league shutout in his eighth start, guiding the Phillies to a 4-0 victory over Pittsburgh.
Minnesota’s Kyle Gibson gave up two hits in the first innings but none over the following seven to lead the Twins over Boston 2-1.
Colorado’s Jon Gray pitched seven strong innings as the Rockies beat Atlanta 4-3.
Oakland’s Coco Crisp singled home the winning run in the 13th inning to break a defensive stalemate and give the Athletics a 1-0 win against Tampa Bay.
Cincinnati’s Joey Votto extended his post-All Star break surge with a three-run homer which powered the Reds past Arizona 6-2.
