CHICAGO (AP) -The Detroit Tigers purchased the contract of infielder Mike Hessman from Triple-A Toledo and optioned outfielder Timo Perez to Toledo on Monday.
The 29-year-old Hessman will be making his season debut and will start at first base and bat eighth against the White Sox on Monday night. He led the International League with 27 home runs and hit .256 with 87 RBIs.
Hessman made the Atlanta Braves’ Opening Day roster in 2004. He played in 29 games in three stints with the Braves and hit .130 with two home runs and five RBIs. He was also called up in the 2003 season and hit .286 in 19 games for the Braves.
Perez was 1-for-7 in the three games with Detroit.
