ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -Texas catcher Gerald Laird left Sunday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians in the second inning because of a bruised left hand after he was hit by a pitch.
Preliminary X-rays on the hand were negative and Laird’s status is day-to-day.
Laird went down to the ground writhing in pain after being hit on an inside pitch from Cleveland’s Paul Byrd. Texas manager Ron Washington and head athletic trainer Jamie Reed came out to check on Laird.
After Laird threw his batting helmet, he went into the clubhouse with Reed. Adam Melhuse pinch ran for Laird and stayed in the game to catch.
Laird is hitting .233 with six home runs and 32 RBIs.
