SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -San Francisco Giants shortstop Omar Vizquel had to leave Saturday’s game against Milwaukee in the sixth inning with an apparent foot injury.
Vizquel was batting against Brewers’ reliever Mitch Stetter when the 41-year-old shortstop fouled a ball off his left foot. He winced in pain and dropped to the ground before a team trainer and manager Bruce Bochy came out to check on him. Vizquel eventually got to his feet and finished his at-bat, drawing a walk before being replaced by pinch-runner Ivan Ochoa.
Vizquel, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in February, entered the game with a .156 average and was 6-for-64 over a 21-game stretch before doubling and singling off Milwaukee starter Ben Sheets. The veteran shortstop also scored and drove in a run.
Earlier this season Vizquel set the major league record for most games played at shortstop and extended that mark to 2,618 games Saturday.
