SEATTLE (AP) -Baltimore starter Erik Bedard, the league leader in strikeouts, was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday night against Seattle.
Bedard said he woke up Monday morning in Seattle with a stiff neck and the discomfort hasn’t completely gone away. He missed his scheduled bullpen work on Monday and Tuesday and manager Dave Trembley decided after Tuesday night’s game to scratch Bedard.
Bedard (8-4) played catch on Wednesday and will start on Friday when Baltimore opens a three-game series in Oakland.
“He said it’s his decision and I respect that, so it’s fine,” Bedard said.
Daniel Cabrera (6-10) started in Bedard’s place in the finale of a three-game series with the Mariners. Cabrera pitched on four days rest, having thrown six innings last Saturday against the White Sox.
“The guy is big and strong and seems to rebound as well as anyone we have on the staff,” Trembley said.
Bedard leads the majors with 156 strikeouts, 23 more than Minnesota’s Johan Santana. Over his last five starts, Bedard is 4-0 and hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last two starts.
