CLEVELAND (AP) -In the aftermath of another bad performance by their bullpen, the Chicago White Sox optioned reliever Nick Masset to the minors and purchased the contract of right-hander Ehren Wasserman.
Chicago’s bullpen is 3-13 with a 7.52 ERA and nine blown saves in its past 58 games. It nearly squandered an 11-2 lead Monday night before the White Sox held on for an 11-10 victory over the Cleveland Indians.
To make room on its 40-man roster, the club transferred third baseman Joe Crede from the 15-day to 60-day disabled list.
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has been highly critical of his relievers, and indicated the club might make more than one move this week. However, after consulting with general manager Kenny Williams, the team decided only to bring up Wasserman.
The right-hander went 2-4 with a 2.11 ERA in 38 appearances for Triple-A Charlotte.
“I like him,” Guillen said. “He throws strikes. He comes sidearm and that might throw some guys off.”
Guillen was most discouraged by Masset’s lack of command. The right-hander went 2-3 with a 7.09 ERA, but was 0-2 with a 10.89 ERA in his last 19 appearances, walking 16 in only 19 innings.
