TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -Yankees outfielder-designated hitter Hideki Matsui resumed on-field batting practice Saturday, taking 55 swings as he continues to rehab a sore left knee.
Matsui, who went on the 15-day disabled list June 27, also hit off a tee and took part in a soft-toss session for the fourth consecutive day. He is scheduled to take BP again Sunday.
Matsui is batting .323 with seven homers and 34 RBIs in 69 games.
Left fielder Johnny Damon underwent treatment for his injured left shoulder and still plans to hit off a tee Monday. Damon said his shoulder is feeling “a lot better.”
Also, right-hander Phil Hughes, placed on the disabled list April 30 with a broken rib, threw 25 pitches in his first mound session. The Yankees hope he will return in September.
Free agent pitcher Victor Zambrano worked out for the second straight day at the Yankees’ minor league complex. The right-hander threw a 35-pitch bullpen session.
Humberto Sanchez, coming back from elbow ligament replacement surgery, struck out two during a perfect inning in a Gulf Coast League game.
The Yankees are among the teams thought to be interested in trying to obtain Colorado reliever Brian Fuentes. A Rockies’ scout was at Saturday’s game and watched Sanchez pitch.
