NEW YORK (AP) - Jason Giambi's meeting with baseball steroids investigator George Mitchell will take place later this month.
Giambi agreed to the session on June 21, and lawyers have worked since then trying to get a date that worked for all involved. The New York Yankees designated hitter, who admitted he had a ``personal history regarding steroids,'' will become the first active player known to meet with Mitchell.
A person familiar with the talks confirmed Thursday that the meeting will take place in July but declined to give the exact date. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig had said last month that Mitchell assured him ``Giambi's interview will be scheduled promptly.''
Giambi, a former AL MVP, has been sidelined by a foot injury since May 30, and the Yankees don't know when he'll be able to play again.
Speaking earlier this week before the All-Star game in San Francisco, Selig said he had not been formally interviewed by Mitchell or the steroids staff but is willing to speak with them.
``I have no problem with that at all,'' he said. ``In fact, I hope they do.''
Selig didn't know whether Mitchell has asked to meet with Barry Bonds, suspected by many of having used performance-enhancing drugs.
``The senator does not discuss who he's requested and what he's requested and how he's requested, which is the way I wanted it,'' Selig said.
