PITTSBURGH (AP) -The Pirates scratched left-hander Phil Dumatrait from his scheduled start against St. Louis on Saturday due to an aching shoulder and recalled Double-A pitcher Yoslan Herrera to face the Cardinals.
The Pirates made four roster moves following their 6-0 loss to the Cardinals on Friday night, also optioning right-hander Luis Munoz back to Double-A Altoona and reinstating right-handed reliever Franquelis Osoria from the 15-day disabled list.
Dumatrait (3-4, 5.26 ERA) went on the disabled list June 22, then returned to allow seven runs and nine hits in 3 1-3 innings against Houston on Monday. He felt discomfort in the shoulder while throwing Wednesday, and the Pirates decided to reinstate him to the 15-day disabled list when his condition didn’t improve. The move is retroactive to Monday.
Herrera, a pitcher for the Cuban national team from 2001-04 before defecting, is one of the Pirates’ few pitching prospects. He signed a $1.92 million, three-year contract with the Pirates before the 2007 season, but has spent his first 1 1/2 seasons with them in the minors.
The 27-year-old Herrera was 5-8 with a 3.11 ERA at Altoona, allowing two earned runs of fewer in seven of his last eight starts. He also won his only game with Triple-A Indianapolis, giving up two runs in seven innings. He was 6-9 with a 4.69 ERA in the minors last season.
Munoz didn’t pitch for the Pirates after being recalled Thursday. Osoria (3-2, 6.02 ERA) went on the disabled list June 28 with right ankle bursitis.
