NEW YORK (AP) -The San Francisco Giants recalled infielder Eugenio Velez from Triple-A Fresno before Tuesday night’s game against the New York Mets.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Velez will mostly be used off the bench.
“He’s been playing well down there. He gives us an added dimension to our bench, gives us speed,” Bochy said.
Velez made San Francisco’s opening-day roster out of spring training and started 25 games for the Giants. He batted .207 with nine RBIs, four triples and eight stolen bases in 121 at-bats during his first stint with the club this season.
Velez fills the roster spot of outfielder Brian Horwitz, who was optioned to Fresno on Sunday.
