ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) – Manny Ramirez hit the first pitch he saw for a single in his latest bid to return to the big leagues.
The 41-year-old slugger went 1 for 3 in his debut for Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday night, three days after joining the Texas Rangers on a minor league contract.
Facing a top Kansas City pitching prospect in right-hander Yordano Ventura of Omaha, Ramirez singled on a soft line drive to right leading off the second.
Ramirez hit the first pitch again in the third, grounding into a fielder’s choice. He finished with a strikeout and a walk.
The 12-time All-Star hasn’t played in the majors since 2011 with Tampa Bay. A comeback try in the Oakland system failed last year.
He recently finished a three-month stint playing in Taiwan.
