WASHINGTON (AP) – The San Diego Padres activated shortstop Everth Cabrera from the 15-day disabled list Friday and optioned right-handed pitcher Burch Smith to Triple-A Tucson.
Cabrera leads the National League with 31 steals and San Diego with a .305 batting average. He was in the starting lineup as the Padres prepared to open a weekend series at Washington.
“We spoke earlier in the day and hopefully he can pick up where he left off,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “(He’s) obviously a dynamic player.”
Cabrera missed 17 games with a strained left hamstring and the Padres went 5-12 during that time.
San Diego has lost six straight and trails NL-West leading Arizona by 4 1/2 games.
Smith appeared in six games, going 0-1 with an 11.37 earned run average.
