 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The New York Yankees are no longer expecting the return of CC Sabathia to their rotation this year.
Manager Joe Girardi said Friday ''that's about fair to say'' Sabathia's season is over. The six-time All-Star left-hander has been out with a degenerative cartilage problem in his right knee. After making his second rehab start Wednesday, Sabathia experienced swelling the next morning.
The 33-year-old will be examined July 14 by Dr. James Andrews before the next step is determined, but Girardi said that surgery is possible.
Sabathia is in his sixth season with the Yankees, and his ERA reached 5.28 in mid-May when he was placed on the disabled list.
