HOUSTON (AP) -Houston Astros catcher Humberto Quintero suffered a concussion when his helmet was struck by a bat in Tuesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Quintero was taken to a hospital where tests were negative. The Astros said Quintero would be kept there overnight and be placed on the 15-day disabled list. Houston will recall catcher J.R. Towles from Triple-A Round Rock to fill Quintero’s roster spot.
Quintero’s helmet was struck by Luis Maza’s bat as he finished a swing on a fly out in the second inning. Quintero lay motionless as head athletic trainer Dave Labossiere and manager Cecil Cooper came out to check on him. Quintero needed help leaving the field and was replaced by Brad Ausmus.
The 28-year-old Quintero is hitting .244 this season.
