 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -The San Diego Padres recalled right-hander Mike Thompson from Triple-A Portland on Wednesday to provide a fresh arm in their taxed bullpen.
To clear roster room, San Diego optioned infielder Chase Headley to Double-A San Antonio.
The Padres plan to activate Brian Giles on Friday for the opener of a weekend series at Los Angeles after he was scheduled to complete a rehab assignment with for Class-A Lake Elsinore on Wednesday. Giles has been sidelined with a bruised right knee since May 26, a move retroactive to May 20.
