PITTSBURGH (AP) -The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired right-hander Denny Bautista from the Detroit Tigers for a minor league pitcher on Wednesday and will add the reliever to their major league roster.
The Tigers got right-handed reliever Kyle Peterson, who had four saves in 11 appearances at Class A Lynchburg. To make room for Bautista on their 40-man roster, the Pirates unconditionally released minor league outfielder Kevin Thompson.
The 27-year-old Bautista was 0-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 16 games with Detroit before being designated for assignment on Friday, when Detroit activated reliever Joel Zumaya. Bautista held batters to a .231 average and one home run in 19 innings.
Bautista has spent parts of five seasons in the majors, pitching for the Orioles, Royals, Rockies and Tigers. He is 4-11 with a 6.42 ERA in 51 career appearances, including 21 starts.
The Pirates must clear a 25-man roster spot when Bautista joins them.
Thompson, who formerly played for the Yankees and Athletics, had left hand surgery Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season. He was hitting .284 with four homers and 14 RBIs in 56 games at Triple-A Indianapolis.
