MIAMI (AP) Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton homered in the fourth inning and drove in the go-ahead run with two outs in the eighth, giving the Marlins a 4-2 victory that sent the suddenly shaky Chicago Cubs to a fourth successive loss.
The Cubs have delivered strongly on their preseason favoritism for this year’s World Series title, but their runaway lead in the National League has now been trimmed back to 1-1/2 games ahead of San Francisco.
The Giants made up more ground by winning at Pittsburgh; their 12th win in 14 games.
In the key American League contests, Boston won in 10 innings to avoid a four-game sweep by the Chicago White Sox, and Detroit also won in 10, defeating Seattle.
Miami’s Christian Yelich started the hosts’ rally in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out walk. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch and scored standing up on Stanton’s opposite-field single.
J.T. Realmuto followed with an RBI double as the Marlins moved into a virtual tie with the New York Mets for second in the NL East.
San Francisco’s Joe Panik hit a bases-loaded triple to put the Giants ahead for good as they won 5-3 at Pittsburgh.
After hitting a key double late in Wednesday’s win, Panik again proved the difference, putting the Giants ahead 3-1 with his triple in the third inning.
Mac Williamson followed with an RBI single, and in the sixth he hit a 446-foot home run for only his second homer of the season.
Boston’s Xander Bogaerts singled in the game-winning run in the 10th inning as the Red Sox downed the White Sox 8-7.
Boston came from behind with tying runs in the seventh and another in the eighth. The White Sox loaded the bases with nobody out in the 10th, but a popup and two straight strikeouts ended the threat.
In the bottom half, after two walks, Bogaerts lined one up the middle and Mookie Betts scored easily from second.
Detroit’s pinch runner Cameron Maybin easily scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Steve Cishek with two outs in the 10th inning, giving the Tigers a 5-4 win against Seattle, completing a four-game sweep.
The Mariners, who missed a chance when Robinson Cano struck out with a runner on third to end the 10th, lost their sixth in a row.
Steven Moya drew a one-out walk from Cishek and Maybin pinch ran. Victor Martinez singled, with an error on the play putting runners on second and third. After an intentional walk to load the bases, and then a second out, Cishek then threw a pitch that catcher Chris Iannetta couldn’t corral, allowing Maybin to run home.
Arizona’s Nick Ahmed had a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning to lift the Diamondbacks a 7-6 win at Colorado.
Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler ended his streak of 43 consecutive successful save attempts – a club record and the seventh longest ever – as the Rockies came from 6-3 down to tie the game in the eighth, but Ahmed’s hit still gave Arizona victory.
