CHICAGO (AP) -The Chicago Cubs recalled left-hander Sean Marshall from Triple-A Iowa, put outfielder Reed Johnson on the disabled list and activated pinch-hitter Daryle Ward from the 15-day DL on Tuesday.
Marshall took the mound for the Cubs in the series opener against the Baltimore Orioles. He began the year at Iowa before he was recalled April 9 and posted a 4.15 ERA in 13 relief appearances. He had a save and no decisions before he was sent back to Iowa in early May.
Johnson went on the DL with lower back spasms. He had an injection last week after hurting his back while trying to beat out a bunt at Tampa Bay earlier this month.
Johnson is batting .271 with three home runs and 31 RBI in 56 games with Chicago. He signed with the Cubs on March 25 as a free agent.
Ward was placed on the DL on May 18 with a bulging disc in his lower back. In 30 games for the Cubs this season, he is hitting .200 a homer and six RBIs.
The Cubs also optioned utility man Micah Hoffpauir back to Iowa. In two stints with the Cubs, he has batted .400 in 18 games.
