KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -The Kansas City Royals signed right-handed pitcher John Thomson to a one-year contract on Friday.
The Royals also placed pitcher Scott Elarton on the 15-day disabled list with a right foot sprain.
Thomson, who was given his unconditional release from Toronto on Wednesday, is expected to join the team Friday night in Milwaukee.
Thomson appeared in just 18 games for Atlanta last season after missing time with finger and shoulder injuries. He signed a one-year contract with Toronto in the offseason but never pitched for the Blue Jays.
Thomson developed a sore shoulder during spring training and was sent to Triple-A Syracuse on a rehabilitation assignment, going 2-4 with a 4.58 ERA in seven starts.
The nine-year veteran has a 62-84 record with a 4.69 ERA in 214 career games, including 210 starts.
