PITTSBURGH (AP) -The New York Yankees’ first trip to Pittsburgh in 48 years will resemble their last one in 1960.
Bill Mazeroski will be on the field.
Mazeroski, whose ninth-inning home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series gave the Pirates a surprise championship in a series in which they were outscored 55-27, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Yankees-Pirates game on Tuesday night.
The Yankees have not played in Pittsburgh since Hall of Famer Mazeroski’s historic home run on Oct. 13, 1960. Despite the Steelers’ five Super Bowl championships, Mazeroski’s homer was recently voted by fans as the best moment in Pittsburgh sports history.
The 71-year-old Mazeroski still lives in suburban Pittsburgh part of the year and works each spring as an infield instructor in the Pirates’ camp.
The Yankees will be the final AL team to play an interleague series in Pittsburgh, where the Pirates have played in three ballparks since 1960: Forbes Field, Three Rivers Stadium and PNC Park. The Pirates have played two series in Yankee Stadium since interleague play began in 1997.
