NEW YORK (AP) -Yankees designated hitter Hideki Matsui did not start for the second straight game Thursday because of a swollen left knee.
Manager Joe Girardi called the decision precautionary with a day game after a night game. He expected Matsui to return Friday and said he was available to pinch hit, as he was Wednesday.
Matsui had the knee drained Wednesday and said he didn’t think he would undergo any further tests.
Girardi expected that Matsui would be able to play the field when the Yankees go to a National League park to face the Pittsburgh Pirates next week.
Matsui said he damaged some cartilage in the knee about 10 years ago and it flares up from time to time.
Jorge Posada started at DH for the Yankees against the San Diego Padres on Thursday.
