NEW YORK (AP) -Prized prospect Chase Headley was recalled from the minors Tuesday by the San Diego Padres, who sent outfielder Justin Huber outright to Triple-A Portland.
Headley started in left field and batted sixth against New York Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte.
In other news, Padres third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff was a late scratch from the lineup because of a sore lower back. He was hurt while fielding grounders during batting practice.
The 23-year-old Headley was hitting .305 with 13 homers, 40 RBIs and 24 doubles in 65 games at Portland. He made his major league debut last season, going 4-for-18 over two stints with San Diego.
Headley was converted from third base to left field in spring training. He was the Texas League player of the year in 2007 after batting .330 for Double-A San Antonio.
To replace Kouzmanoff, Edgar Gonzalez shifted from second base to third. Craig Stansberry was inserted into the lineup at second base, batting ninth.
The Padres also said Greg Maddux will move up a day in the rotation to start Friday against Detroit on his regular four days of rest. Cha Seung Baek will pitch Saturday.
Huber was hitting .246 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 33 games for San Diego this season. He played 22 games in left field, including 17 starts.
