NEW YORK (AP) -Texas Rangers infielder Hank Blalock will start a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Oklahoma on Monday as he returns from carpal tunnel syndrome surgery on his right wrist.
Blalock had surgery on May 30 after a cortisone shot in the wrist did not help reduce the swelling. The former All-Star third baseman, who will shift to first base, was originally on the 15-day disabled list since April 29 with a torn left hamstring. He recovered from that injury, then experienced wrist soreness.
Blalock was batting .299 with three homers and seven RBIs in 87 at-bats this season.
The Rangers also made a move before the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Mets on Sunday, recalling left-hander Kason Gabbard from Oklahoma to start the second game. To make room on the roster, Texas designated inconsistent right-hander Robinson Tejeda for assignment.
Gabbard was 1-0 with a 2.12 ERA in his first six outings but is 1-2 with a 4.75 ERA in nine starts overall. He walked 29 and struck out 20 in 41 2-3 innings.
