CINCINNATI (AP) -Boston Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez didn’t start Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds as he rested a tender right hamstring that has bothered him recently.
Ramirez came out of the Reds’ 3-1 win Friday night because the hamstring was sore. He stretched in the clubhouse Saturday and took batting practice. Manager Terry Francona wasn’t sure of his plans for Ramirez.
“One thing I don’t want to do is start getting into the thing where he plays five and misses one,” Francona said before the game.
Ramirez missed a game last week because of the hamstring and made 10 straight starts at designated hitter. The Red Sox can’t use the DH in National League ballparks.
Boston also is missing David Ortiz, who is in Boston recovering from a wrist injury. The interleague game Saturday was only the second time this season that the Red Sox played without the duo. The other time was June 6, and that didn’t go well at all – an 8-0 loss to Seattle.
Plus, catcher Jason Varitek missed his third straight game Saturday with an illness, and shortstop Julio Lugo was a late scratch from the lineup because of an upset stomach.
