HOUSTON (AP) -The New York Yankees optioned infielder Shelley Duncan to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre on Friday and recalled shortstop Alberto Gonzalez.
Duncan, 28, was hitting .175 in 23 games this season and had only four hits in his last 26 at-bats. He hasn’t played in New York’s last seven games.
Duncan took the move in stride and called it more of an opportunity than a demotion.
“In this game, I’m a little kid,” said Duncan. “And little kids don’t really like to watch, they like to play. You have that little feeling where you’re just like seeing everybody playing the game and you’re, ‘I want to play, I want to play.’ That’s kind of the deal I have a lot of the times.”
Duncan was sent down for two weeks in April and hit .309 with six homers and 17 RBIs.
“Being able to go down and play, that’s something that will be fun,” he said. “It was fun last time and it will be fun this time.”
Gonzalez, 25, will make his third stint with the Yankees this season. In 24 games with Scranton/Wilkes Barre this season, Gonzalez is batting .287 with nine runs scored and 16 RBIs.
